The Oakland Athletics attempt to push their winning streak into double digits when they host the Los Angeles Angels on Monday afternoon for the opener of their three-game series. Oakland’s string of success reached nine games when it completed a three-game sweep of Seattle with Sunday’s 7-1 triumph.

Josh Phegley went 2-for-3 with a homer and three RBIs for the Athletics, who also swept a three-game set in Cleveland after winning three straight at Detroit before the finale of the four-game series was suspended with them holding a two-run lead. Phegley is tied with Gary Sanchez of the New York Yankees for the most RBIs among American League catchers (31) and is three shy of matching the career high he set in 2015 with Oakland. Luis Rengifo ignited a six-run rally in the seventh inning with a two-run single as the Angels rallied from a 5-1 deficit on Sunday and held on for a 7-6 triumph – their second straight win following a five-game slide. Rengifo has posted back-to-back two-hit performances and three in his last four contests for Los Angeles, which is beginning an eight-game road trip after going 4-5 on its homestand.

Tony’s Pick TEAM

PITCHING MATCHUP: Angels RH Felix Pena (2-1, 3.22 ERA) vs. Athletics RH Chris Bassitt (2-1, 2.48)

Pena has followed an “opener” after making four traditional starts to begin the season but worked one inning of scoreless relief in Sunday’s victory over Texas. The 29-year-old Dominican worked five frames in his previous appearance, allowing one run and four hits versus Minnesota on May 20 without receiving a decision. Pena made his season debut in Oakland on March 30, when he yielded four runs and four hits over 3 2/3 innings of a loss that dropped him to 0-2 with an 8.79 ERA in three starts and one relief appearance against the Athletics in his career.

Bassitt escaped with a no-decision at Cleveland on Tuesday after giving up three runs on three hits and six walks across 3 2/3 innings. The 30-year-old native of Ohio was much more effective in his previous turn, scattering four hits over eight scoreless frames in a victory at Detroit. Bassitt has yet to defeat the Angels in his career as he is 0-2 with a 6.75 ERA in two starts and a pair of relief outings.

1. Angels INF David Fletcher is riding a five-game hitting streak during which he has gone 9-for-19 with a pair of three-hit performances, including one on Sunday.

2. Oakland 3B Matt Chapman has gone 4-for-8 with two homers, three RBIs and three runs over his last two contests.

3. Los Angeles optioned RHP Jaime Barria to Triple-A Salt Lake on Sunday to open a roster spot for LHP Andrew Heaney (elbow), who was activated from the injured list and allowed two runs with eight strikeouts in five innings of a no-decision.
