1947: Year of the law being replaced. Mexico’s interior ministry finishes its review of a new gaming law

Mexico’s Secretaría de Gobernación (Segob) has finished its internal review of a draft to replace the Federal Law on Games and Draws, which dates from 1947. Interior Secretary Rosa Icela Rodríguez announced the step at the government’s morning press conference on 13 October 2026. The draft now goes to the federal security cabinet for evaluation before it is formally presented.

According to El Imparcial, the main aim is to fight tax evasion and money laundering in the betting sector. The text of Segob’s draft has not been published, so its provisions for online sports betting are not yet known.

A separate bill from Morena deputy Alberto Martínez Urincho goes further. It would limit promotions by influencers, celebrities and athletes, end betting advertising during sports broadcasts, require biometric checks to keep minors out and ban incentives such as welcome bonuses. If adopted, a bonus ban would change how operators such as Caliente and Codere México compete for new customers.

Under the current rules, online operators must be linked to authorized land-based permit holders and keep their servers and infrastructure in Mexico. An industry association quoted in the same report said online betting roughly doubled its customer base during the 2026 World Cup.
