Kalshi caps deposits at $2,500 a month for users aged 18 to 20
Kalshi still accepts users from age 18, but is adding a default $2,500 monthly deposit limit for 18-to-20-year-olds and prompts for new traders who put a large share of their balance into one trade. Most state-licensed sportsbooks require customers to be 21.
What happened
Kalshi is adding safeguards for its youngest customers while keeping its minimum age at 18. Accounts held by 18-to-20-year-olds get a default deposit limit of $2,500 a month, which the company said on October 27, 2026 would roll out “in the coming days.” New traders with a balance above $1,000 who put more than 25% of it into a single trade will see a prompt to diversify.
Kalshi is also working with Parent ProTech and ConnectSafely on parents’ guides to prediction markets, and Birches Health provides confidential mental health support. Existing tools include escalating interventions, limit-setting after a first trade, and an “Inner Circle” feature that alerts parents or loved ones to the trading of 18-to-20-year-olds. Users under 18 are rejected automatically through Know Your Customer checks.
The details
Because prediction markets are regulated federally as financial markets, they accept users from 18, while most state-regulated casinos and sportsbooks require customers to be 21. “Like the stock exchange, Kalshi is available only to traders 18 and older,” said Luana Lopes Lara, Kalshi’s chief operating officer and co-founder. American Gaming Association president Bill Miller has called prediction markets “a backdoor into sports-betting in jurisdictions where the legal betting age is 21.”
A CNN analysis published in August estimated that users under 21 had traded about $5.4 billion on Kalshi so far in 2026; a Kalshi spokesperson told CNN that the group made up 3.14% of overall volume. The NBA, PGA Tour and NCAA have urged the CFTC to raise the minimum age for sports contracts to 21.
What it means
Deposit limits cap how much money goes into an account; they do not change what can be traded. Prediction markets’ legal status is also being fought in court: see the CFTC’s lawsuit against Utah and Northwestern coach David Braun’s warning about gambling.
