- 2Search it in the Gambling Commission public register.
- 3Confirm the company name in the register matches the one in the sportsbook’s terms and conditions.
- 4If anything is missing or doesn’t match, don’t deposit. Unlicensed sites offer no protection if they refuse to pay out.
Frequently asked questions
Do I pay tax on betting winnings in the UK?
No. UK bettors pay no tax on winnings from licensed bookmakers, and winnings do not need to be declared. The operators pay betting duty on their profits instead.
What is the most a UK betting bonus can make me wager?
Ten times the bonus. Since 19 January 2026 the Gambling Commission caps wagering requirements at 10x and bans bonuses that mix sports betting with casino or other products.
How do I check a UK bookmaker is licensed?
Find the account number in the bookmaker’s footer and search it in the Gambling Commission’s public register. The register shows the company name, its licensed activities and any sanctions.
